St. Lucie County has three municipalities: Fort Pierce, the county seat, Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie Village. About 82,000 more people live in unincorporated communities such as Lakewood Park, River Park and Hutchinson Island South. The state estimated the county's population at about 394,000 in April 2025.
Common problems
- Broken spring. You may hear a loud bang from the garage, then find the door too heavy to lift. Springs hold the door's weight under high tension, so replacing them is a job for a trained technician.
- Snapped or loose cable. The door hangs crooked or one side drops. Cables work with the springs, so they're often damaged together.
- Door off its track. Rollers come out of the track after a bump or a worn part, and the door jams partway.
- Opener problems. The motor hums but the door doesn't move, the remote stops working, or the door reverses before it closes. Dirty or misaligned safety sensors are a common cause.
- Storm damage. Strong wind can bend panels, push a door out of its tracks or leave it unable to close securely.

What homes in Fort Pierce are up against
Treasure Coast homes sit between the Atlantic and the Indian River Lagoon, a 156-mile estuary, so much of the region lives with salt air and coastal wind. Design wind speeds rise toward the coast: Fort Pierce, for example, designs typical homes for 160 mph east of 25th Street and 150 mph west of it. Garage doors have to be rated for those pressures, and salt air wears on their metal hardware.
Storms that hit close to home
- Hurricane Frances, September 2004. Came ashore at the southern end of Hutchinson Island. The highest storm surge measured on Florida's east coast, 5.89 feet, was at the St. Lucie Lock, and the National Weather Service called St. Lucie one of the hardest-hit counties.
- Hurricane Jeanne, September 2004. Hit the same stretch of coast three weeks later as a Category 3. The strongest gust measured in Florida, about 128 mph, was at the Fort Pierce Inlet.
- Hurricane Wilma, October 2005. Crossed the state from the southwest coast. The weather service estimated gusts over 100 mph on St. Lucie beaches.
- Hurricane Ian, September 2022. Rain bands flooded roads and yards in parts of the county.
- Hurricane Milton, October 9, 2024. Spawned tornadoes across the county. An EF-3 with peak winds of 155 mph tracked about 21 miles from near Carlton into Indian River County, and all six deaths were in the Spanish Lakes community. EF-1 tornadoes also hit central Port St. Lucie, Lakewood Park and the Indrio Road area.

Permits and rules
Who issues your permit depends on where you live. The county's Building & Code Regulation Division, at 2300 Virginia Avenue in Fort Pierce, handles unincorporated St. Lucie County. Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce and St. Lucie Village each issue their own permits. The county enforces the 2023 (8th edition) Florida Building Code.
Wind requirements vary inside the county. Fort Pierce, for example, designs typical homes for 150 mph west of 25th Street and 160 mph east of it, including the barrier island.
What affects the cost
Prices vary by provider, so ask for a quote before any work starts. What usually affects the price:
- Which part failed, and whether related parts, like the second spring or the cables, should be replaced at the same time
- The size and weight of the door
- Repairing the door versus replacing it, and the new door's material and insulation
- Wind-rated or impact-rated doors, and any permit the job needs
- Same-day, night or weekend service

Questions people ask
Is it safe to open a door with a broken spring?
It's best not to. Without a working spring, the door's full weight rests on the opener or on you, and it can drop suddenly. Leave it closed if you can and call for help.
Should both springs be replaced?
Doors with two springs usually have springs of the same age, so when one breaks the other may not be far behind. Your provider can tell you whether replacing both makes sense.
Who will come to my home?
An independent garage door provider who serves Fort Pierce. Main Street Services connects you; the provider does the work and sets the price.
Do I pay for the call?
No. The call and the referral are free. You only pay the provider if you hire them.
