Burst pipe

A burst pipe can release a lot of water in a short time, so the first few minutes matter most.

What to do now

1. Shut off the water at the main valve. It's often near the water meter, where the line enters the house, or in the garage. Find it before you need it.
2. Turn off power to wet areas if you can reach the breaker panel safely. Don't walk through standing water near outlets or appliances.
3. Open faucets to drain the water left in the lines.
4. Move belongings out of the wet area and take photos for your insurer.
5. Call for help to remove the water and start drying.

Why fast drying matters

The EPA advises drying water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold. Water also wicks into drywall, cabinets and flooring beyond what you can see, so a provider measures moisture to find where it went.
